5 reasons why it’s great to work on Christmas

17 Dec 2018

Have you been roped into working at the office whilst all your other colleagues are off enjoying their festive holidays? Don’t feel bitter about it, in fact there are some great benefits to working over Christmas. Here’s a few reasons why it’s great to work on Christmas day...

You can avoid the awkward family Christmas lunch

As much as Christmas is about spending time with your nearest and dearest, it can also force you into uncomfortable social family occasions. Working Christmas means you have the perfect excuse to escape your Great Aunty Betty crying into a glass of wine as she reminisces about the old times or watching Grandad fall asleep over his brussel sprouts.

You’ll get the office to yourself

Assuming you’ll be the only one, or one of only a handful of people working on Christmas means that you can enjoy a more relaxed day at the office. Kick off your shoes, crank up the Crimbo tunes, set the heating to what you want for a change and order in an extra large pizza for your Christmas lunch.

You might actually get more work done

You might find the peace and quiet of an empty office a great motivator for getting your head down and powering through piles of work with minimal distractions. Without the phone constantly ringing or your colleague reciting every comical detail of last week’s Christmas party for the tenth time, you might genuinely get ahead on your workload.

You’ll look extra dedicated

While your colleagues and family might feel sorry for you having to work over Christmas, your boss will take note of your dedication. Not only does this shout to your boss that you love your job, but your fellow colleagues will also be thankful that you sacrificed your Christmas day so that they could spend theirs with family - what a team player you are!

You might get paid more

In the short term you might even be offered an incentive to work the Christmas holidays, whether that’s a bonus in pay or time back as extra holiday for next year. Longer term your display of dedication will be something that your boss will remember and might lead to them offering you more responsibility in future and potentially keep you in their mind for a promotion.
